Deng xiaoping and refunification
- Tried to assure Taiwanese that if they rejoined China they would still have autonomy
- Doesn’t happen but trade increases between the two
- 1987 Taiwan lifts its ban on travel to the mainland
- Also pushed for reunification of Hong Kong (Xianggang)
- This happens in 1997 and it becomes a Special Administrative Region (SAR)
Summary: Deng comes in the 1980s, he wanted to change this first of. He tried to make ties with Taiwan as he was them as a great threat because of their possession of nuclear arms. Although the Taiwanese did not rejoin with China, they began to trade and Taiwan lifts it ban for travel to the mainland. Another big change that Deng tried to push for was the reunification of Hong Kong. Deng successfully reunited with Hong Kong and it becomes a Speical Administrative Region

- Coming to power in 1979 institutes agricultural reforms
- Encouraged farmers to sell on the open market
- Also allowed for the contracting of plots of land (excess profits could be kept) ‘productive responsibility system’
- China accepted loans and foreign investments
- Joined the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and The World Bank
Summary: In order to increase produce productions Deng allowed open market. This allowed farmers to keep the addition money that they earned. This motivated the workers to increase production. China begins to accept loans and foreign investments. China joined the IMF, which prevented countries from failing and going bankrupt, that gave them a lot of security to know that they wont fail.
Social changes•The single child policy introduced in 1979
•Tax benefits to families who accepted this (Some lost their private plots of land) •Marriage law brought in 1980 (confirmed the rights of women and raised age of marriage M=20 to 22 W= 18 to 20) Summary: Two big changes to curb population growths, that were off the charts, the Single Child policy and Marriage Law. If you cut down to one child they would give you tex benefits; no one wanted girls so they were either killed or put up for adoption. The marriage law, this raised the ages of people allowed to be married. Was deng seen as a greater icon than mao? if yes, why- if no, why not? |
